The First Offer

The Yankees have just made C.C. Sabathia a 6-year, $140M offer. The first big splash of the 2008 free agent season is a record-breaking deal that shows a solid determination to land the coveted pitcher. And apparently, Cashman is geared up to make deals to A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe, too. Hmm...

What's this about Jake Peavy? If the deal falls through with the NL teams (mainly the Braves), the Padres would consider trading him to the AL, to most likely the Angels or Yankees. Rumor has it that the Friars would be interested in a package of Igawa, Kennedy, and an outfielder. I don't buy it; it seems like a steal. But if that's really the asking price, Cash should definitely pull the trigger.

We'd be pressed to win 110 games with a rotation like that!

EDIT:
(from ESPN)
As expected Friday, the New York Yankees officially tendered an offer to free-agent pitcher CC Sabathia.

The offer is expected to be six years in length and have a total value of slightly more than the record $137.5 million deal that pitcher Johan Santana signed with the Mets before last season.

Santana's deal had been the largest ever for a pitcher.

Friday represented the first day that free agents can be signed. The Yankees also are expected to make offers to free-agent right-handers A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe.

Burnett has a four-year, $54 million offer from Toronto, while Lowe is looking for a five-year contract.

5 years for a 35-year-old? No way, Lowe.
