Last night, Kevin Slowey threw a 6-inning gem, but the Twins offense squandered many chances against Jake Peavy and Slowey left the game up 1-0. However, Jesse Crain gave up the tying run to the Friars in the seventh. Could the Minnesota offense muster a win in a tight game on the road?
Enter Trevor Hoffman in the top of the 9th. After quickly getting the first two outs, Brendan Harris took the first pitch he saw from the veteran closer over Petco's left field wall. 2-1 Twins. Next up was Brian Buscher, who took Hoff's next pitch over the right field fall for his first career home run. 3-1 Twins. Oops. Joe Nathan came in for the save, and his team took the first game of the set. Nice job, guys!
(Trevor Hoffman may have the numbers, but he's no Mariano. A 4.85 ERA as a closer?)
We won't talk about how the Yankees couldn't touch Tom Gorzelanny last night. But we will talk about how the Pirates couldn't touch Joba tonight. Mr. Chamberlain threw 6.2 scoreless innings to pick up his first win as a starter as the offense got its revenge. This one's special, so here's the box:
Oh, and look at that. Harris just took another elite pitcher deep on the first pitch, but this time it was Greg Maddux. He's on a roll!
Apparently, Shawn Chacon was suspended by the Astros today for behavioral problems. If I were the Yankees FO, I'd consider picking him up...if it were 2005 again. Man, what a craaazy season.
