Short Notes

This morning, I opened my inbox and found an email from a department admin with the subject line:

Your MIT Aero-Astro Graduate Decision

Scary, right? Holly got hers yesterday, so I was actually completely expecting it--and I prepared by turning off Gmail's snippets. With a slightly shaking hand, I opened the message and immediately scanned for length and the infamous phrase: "Thank you for applying. However..." Instead, when my eyes finally calmed down, I saw this:

I'm delighted to tell you of your acceptance to the graduate program in the Aeronautics and Astronautics Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for September 2008...

I had just woken up, so I didn't have the energy to jump on my couch like I did when I got in for undergrad. But boy, is that a relief or what? It's nice to know that I have an option for next year.

(I suppose the subtitle of this weblog will soon change to "...and life as a grad", eh?)

The Democratic debates in Ohio tonight were interesting. Hillary didn't get the slam-dunk she needed; that could be her downfall right there. Obama, in contrast, handled himself quite well. When it comes to class and poise...

In closing, Theo Epstein is a [words cannot describe]. Props to Moose for the comeback:

Theo Epstein, general manager of the Boston Red Sox, called Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina a "bad apple" for complaining about the team's trip to Japan in 2004.

The Red Sox open this season against the Oakland A's in Japan. Appearing on Boston radio station WEEI last Friday, Epstein said, "Kevin Brown and Mike Mussina spent the whole time bitching about it ... and by the time the Yankees team got back from the trip they were all using it as a crutch."

Told of the comments, Mussina said sarcastically, "Yeah, we used it as an excuse for winning the division."

Epstein had been praising his players for their attitude about the trip.

"The research that we've done on the Japan trip from the teams that have previously gone," Epstein said, "is one or two bad apples can spoil the lot."

Said Mussina: "You need a comment from me about him calling me a bad apple? I don't have one."
