Milestone Sunday

In dramatic fashion, Derek Jeter became the all-time hits leader at Yankee Stadium, currently tied with only Lou Gehrig. The hit came off a 2-2 pitch (battled back from 0-2) and was unloaded upon for a rare Jeterian home run. He had the entire homestand to get 9 hits, and he got 6 across the two games yesterday and 3 today. Congrats, Captain! Leave it to Jeter to have that record locked up for the rest of baseball history.

(1269 and counting...)

Mariano Rivera also tied Lee Smith for second on the all-time saves list. He's such an HOF resume padder :-P.

During the evening, Carlos Zambrano of the Cubs threw a no-hitter against the Astros. It was the first Cubs no-no since 1972, and the first in MLB history to take place at a neutral site.

And why not: Francisco Rodriguez broke the single-season save record the other day. Naturally, he threw a ridiculously obnoxious celebration on the mound afterwards. Look, the number is cool and all, but I think quantity is a poor way to judge the success of a closer. After all, save opportunities are a function of your offense and the opponent's defense and pitching; if your team always blows away the opposition, then save opps will be low and that says nothing about the closer. The real stat should be save %. Mariano Rivera has blown only one save out of all his opportunities this season--THAT is saying something.

In other words: Nice try, K-Rod!

This is completely unrelated but it's the funniest thing I've seen in days:
