The Injury Report

We're just a week into the season and already the DL is filled with a number of critical players. Here's a brief rundown of some of the more noteworthy members:
  • Scott Rolen (TOR, 3B) - Broken middle finger
  • J.J. Putz (SEA, closer) - Inflammation in ribs
  • Pedro Martinez (NYM, SP) - Strained hamstring
  • Chad Cordero (WSH, closer) - Right shoulder tendinitis
  • Dioner Navarro (TB, catcher) - Gash on throwing hand
  • Michael Cuddyer (MIN, outfielder) - Dislocated finger
If the season continues to bang and bruise players in this manner, will anyone have a team come the All-Star break?

So how about those Tigers? The Best Offense in the History of Baseball was swept by the Chisox (with a score of 13-2), bringing their record to a lovely 0-6. Honestly guys? Even the Giants have won one game. I don't think anyone could have predicted this (Where is Steve Phillips now?)

The Yankees prevented getting swept by the Rays after their 2-0 victory this afternoon. Chien-Ming Wang threw six beautiful innings, not giving up a hit until the fifth. Joba Chamberlain backed him up by throwing 16 pitches (13 for strikes) across the 7th and 8th, and Mo closed things out with two strikeouts in the 9th. It wasn't a great day for the Yankee offense, but with the arms doing what they needed to do, Matsui's 2-run shot was all that was necessary.

Team Hero: Wang, Matsui, Joba
Honorable Mention: Mo, Cano (for a grab that kept the Rays scoreless in the 8th)

Unfortunately, I haven't had time to follow the Twins closely this past week. I hope to get better with that in the upcoming days.

A group of us went out last night to see 21. I suppose it was fairly entertaining. As in, it was good to see, but I probably have no desire to see it again. We all cracked up at inappropriate moments as Hollywood totally misrepresented our school. I especially enjoyed the small classes, the 9th grade algebra on the chalkboard, and the open and sunny gymnasium. Really folks, MIT isn't like that at all. I suppose the Institute is to blame for not allowing filming on its campus, but eh. It was still amusing at how they didn't even try to replicate how it really is.

(Also, the main character's major is this huge mystery; that drove me nuts. And what in god's name is 2.09? Were they trying to emulate 2.005, the Course II (MechE) class and competition? Who knows.)

Speaking of MIT, the annual Campus Preview Weekend is this Thursday to Sunday. Over 1000 pre-freshmen will be here, which apparently is the largest group ever. In one of those naturally poetic moves, this, my final CPW, will be much like my first: The Yanks will be at Fenway for the first time of the season (of course, back in 2004, the series was the first time the teams had met since the 2003 ALCS, so it was loads more intense.) Between entertaining prefrosh, cheering on the Yanks, and dealing with school, it should be a fun week indeed.

So allow me to go get it started now. G'night, folks.
