The Yankees are doomed

They dropped the series opener to the Royals. Phil Hughes threw 87 pitches over three innings. Derek Jeter has a strained quad and could be headed to the DL. The offense only scored two runs. And LaTroy Hawkins is *gasp* wearing #21. That about wraps it up for the 2008 New York Yankees--they might as well call it a season right now!

Why Yankees fans annually go through this self-inflicted irrational torture is beyond me. I heard some people today call Hughes "overrated" and suggest a trade, all because he had a terrible start. Honestly guys? Honestly? The Phranchise wasn't once rated the top pitching prospect in the system for no reason. It was a bad April day for him, and we, as reasonable fans, need to 1) be happy it happened now and not later and 2) wish him the best in the future (Sadly, that's all the analysis I can offer since I missed the game. But I don't think my opinion would have changed much.)

Oh, also, Alex Rodriguez is not playing short in Jeter's absence. He's been out of the position for over four years. He also currently lacks the physical shape for a SS since he's been building himself up to be a third baseman. One day we will get over this fantasy.

So the Yankees aren't doomed, but I can say that the Tigers are. In letting the Red Sox shut them out in the Fenway Opener, Detroit is now 0-7. Let it be known that no 0-7 team has ever made the playoffs. Either Leyland's boys are trying to defy history, or Steve Phillips needs to prepare a nice crow pie.

And lastly, the efforts of over 5-million voters (including myself) were not in vain. When the Mets asked for the fans to pick their new 8th inning song using a webform with an "other" option, they should have been prepared:

Unfortunately, the Rickrolling will not be a normal thing; Shea officials considered the vote "illegitimate". Instead, they'll just cycle through a bunch and gauge fan interest to pick the favorite. What a way to celebrate the final opening day in the park :-).
