This morning, before gift-unwrapping began, our two dogs got into a fight. Now maybe it had to do with the fact that they had tons of Christmas treats floating around, so Gypsy, now the eldest, felt a stronger sense of possessiveness. Perhaps it was aggravated by mom returning a bone Gypsy stole from Vesper back to its original owner. But we won't know for sure. All we will know is that, in the middle of mom opening her present from me, Vesper walked by Gypsy and the latter jumped up and starting attacking. As in vicious snarling, biting, and clawing attacking.
For those of you who don't know my dogs, here's the deal. Gypsy is a 4-year-old golden retriever with no mean bone in her body (at least, not until this morning). She seems to love everyone and everything, and until today, allowed Vesper to tackle/scratch/nibble at her. Vesper is an 8-month-old pointer who also loves everyone, but seems to have an infinity of obnoxious energy. Mom and dad impulse bought her a few months ago.
By those descriptions you'd never think them capable of any sort of violence. Yet somehow, they were. We broke up the first fight and were all in total shock. Vesper, although she tried to "fight back", ran over to mom's lap shaking like leaf. I restrained Gypsy and reprimanded her, etc etc. When things seemed to cool down, I walked Gypsy over to see the frightened puppy. At first she starting licking her like she was making up. Then Vesper made a major mistake: she growled. This threw Gypsy into a fit of rage again. But unlike the first time, breaking this one up concluding in scratch wounds to mom and Asha, a small bite wound to me, and a piece of Vesper's ear ripped off.
So, haha, we've had to separate the two all day long. Gypsy roams the house while Vesper stays hidden in Asha's room. Gypsy seems ready to start anew, but Vesper issues an empty-threat growl every time she gets too close. If they don't get over this soon, we have no idea how we're going to deal with it...
Other than that, the day went fine :-). I acquired some 2000+ pages of literature to finish before IAP ends (Wicked, Moneyball, Atlas Shrugged, and Freakonomics), which is awesome. I haven't read for fun since...wow, I can't even remember (before you say "Harry Potter," note that Ms. Rowling's series isn't for fun--it's a damn necessity). I also got some new articles of clothing, a fancy Yankees desklamp, Star Wars: The Complete Saga for Wii, and the amazing iPod Touch. Very nice.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
