Speaking of the Angels, do they totally own the Red Sox this year or what? John Lackey carried a no-no into the 9th yesterday. He had to face Lord Jacoby, Scrappy Pedroia, and Whinemaster Yuckilis, so I was pretty sure it would get blown. Sure enough, Scrappy killed it with a gritty single, and Youk ended the shutout with a two-run shot right afterward. But it doesn't change the fact that the Angels were in full control during the game, and they now have beaten the Sox seven times in a row. God damn.
And about that no hitter? Let's be real here folks: if John Lackey (career 7.00+ ERA against Boston) of the Angels (known for notoriously bending over to the Red Sox) threw a no-no (a rare event on its own) against the Red Sox (dominate the Angels) at Fenway Park (home of Red Sox dark magic) then the world would have exploded. Let's be happy that we were allowed to live another day!
The trade deadline is tomorrow. So let's see: we had Mark Texiera going to the Angels yesterday. One, like they needed that, and two, I wish all future Yankees (also Sabathia) would just stay put until the offseason. But the biggest news came around 4:30pm--the Yanks traded Kyle Farnsworth to Detroit for Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez. Whoa. After sitting on this, I REALLY like this move. Now we have a competent hitting catcher who is also a ridiculous defender. And at the same time, we drop Krazy Kyle Farnsacoaster, which means fewer heart attacks for us all in the future. Not to mention some combo of Marte, Veras, and Edwar can do 8th inning stuff pretty well. Nice. And the best part of it all? Pudge is a free agent at the end of the season, so there is no long-term commitment necessary. Cashman does it again!
On a totally different note: this is amusing:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/30/mccain.ad/
(CNN) -- Britney Spears, Paris Hilton ... Sen. Barack Obama?Yes. Let's use the fact that Obama is a popular candidate against him. Because having people excited about you is...a bad thing? This tactic is amusing because it's so idiotic--doesn't McCain know that political parties began when people became truly excited about their guy? Trying to mock how Obama brought life and energy back to the American political scene is asinine, and honestly, it insults our entire system.
A new campaign ad from Sen. John McCain -- which flashes shots of the two aforementioned megacelebrities -- calls Obama a megacelebrity, too, and questions his leadership ability.
"He's the biggest celebrity in the world. But is he ready to lead? With gas prices soaring, Barack Obama says no to offshore drilling and says he'll raise taxes on electricity. Higher taxes, more foreign oil -- that's the real Obama," the ad's narrator says while crowds screaming, "Obama!" are shown.
